Power of the Presses In Our Hands (with an essay by John Cutrone)
Power of the Presses In Our Hands celebrates print culture –– past, present, and future. It speaks to the democratic power of the press and how it builds communities. Created to accompany Power of the Presses, the 2025 triennial artists' books exhibition at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art in Washington, this book features many of the works from the exhibition, together with essays written by some of today's best known voices in the book arts.
Both this book and the exhibition remind us that the printing press has been a tool of transformation since the Age of the Enlightenment. And, while that era is past, the need to share our voice, find our people, and learn about the world around us is ongoing. Each of us has the power in our hands to do just that.
Convivio's John Cutrone contributed an essay to the project. It is his answer to the question posed to him by Catherine Alice Michaelis, the curator of the exhibition: "What do you see on the horizon for the power of the press and artists' books?" John's essay takes us on a roundabout journey about books through topics like Christmas and Epiphany and ultimately to his experience with one student who reminds us that the power of the press –– and the future of the book –– is in good hands.
