Ribbon of Highway: An American Christmas Revels (Audio Recording on CD)
In this house, we listen to this and all our Revels recordings throughout the Christmas season, from around Solstice Night all the way to Candlemas, and music by the Revels is a big part of our annual Yuletide celebration. Here's one we enjoy all year long.
This recording of American music as one may have heard in the 1930s is performed for a live audience at the Sanders Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Artists include Squirrel Butter, Tui, Carolyn Saxon, Issa A. Bibbins, David Coffin, and the classic Revels choruses, adult and children's. You'll recognize a lot of this music, while some may be new to you. The recording include Shaker spirituals, Shape Note tunes, Gospel songs, Bluegrass and music from Appalachia, and Folk music. You'll hear songs written by The Carter Family, and by Stephen Foster. This one is a rousing good time!
This is a compact disc, not a download. Here at Convivio Bookworks, we still enjoy popping a disc into a proper stereo and we especially love reading the accompanying liner notes in the analog booklet that comes with the CD. I know. Very old school and not nearly as cool as vinyl... but then again, perhaps we are on the cutting edge of an upcoming renewed interest in CDs. Stranger things have happened.
