We love autumn and we love apples and we love ghost stories and the Hudson River Valley... so it's only natural that we love the works of Washington Irving. And if you only know The Legend of Sleepy Hollow through the animated Disney short film, as entertaining as it is, then you're missing out on one of the best spooky stories ever written. The subtleties of the story are lost in the Disney film. Ichabod Crane, a schoolteacher, came to Tarrytown in the glen of Sleepy Hollow to ply his trade in educating young minds. He was a gullible and excitable fellow, often so terrified by locals' stories of ghosts that he would hurry through the woods on his way home, singing to keep from hysterics. Until late one night, he finds that maybe they're not just stories. What is that dark, menacing figure riding behind him on a horse? And what does it have in its hands? And why wasn't schoolteacher Crane ever seen in Sleepy Hollow again? This edition also includes the rest of Washington Irving's short stories and sketches from The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, including the other eerie tales: "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Spectre Bridegroom," but the stories have been rearranged so The Legend takes top billing.
