This introductory workshop will begin with a slide lecture about the history of encaustic painting, plus safety precautions and examples by artists working in the medium today. From there, it's hands-on exploration: You'll first learn how to set down a base with medium to achieve a smooth surface with fusing. Next, the application of encaustic paint, including textures, layering, and final embellishments, including oil stick and metallic foil. Open to all levels; no experience necessary. We supply all materials.
Please be sure to include your email address and mobile phone number when checking out, so we may send you workshop information and confirmation in advance of the workshop via email and text messaging.
Instructor Glo Graham Sollecito is a Lake Worth Beach artist whose encaustic paintings have been exhibited widely throughout South Florida. About this process, Glo says: "I have always been drawn to creating art in its many forms, but in 2008, during an art residency in California, I discovered encaustic painting and was immediately captivated. The sensuality of the medium—the warmth, the aroma of molten wax, and the endless textural possibilities—was what I loved. The mystery embedded within the layers and the beautiful unpredictability of flame meeting wax continues to fascinate me.
I feel like time can be suspended, a moment captured and preserved indefinitely in an encaustic painting while still allowing for transformation. The wax can always be reheated, altered, reimagined. This balance between permanence and impermanence mirrors my own creative process.
The vibrant, luminous colors achievable through encaustic are essential to my work, allowing me to express inspirations drawn from my native South Florida and a lifetime of travel. Each painting becomes both a record of experience and an invitation to linger over the possibilities."
Sounds like a world of possibilities to us, and we love that!
