We heartily believe that in order to fully appreciate the joy of Christmas, you need to set the stage for needing joy, and this is what Advent is all about. Rather than dive headlong into Christmas the day after Thanksgiving, we instead make a good use of this time of preparation: The slow and careful preparation of not just material things, but also of our heats and minds. It's a good time to make amends, a good time to do things with care. Anticipation builds with each day we come closer to the Christmas season. The Advent calendar is an old and beautiful tradition that began in Germany; it helps us mark those passing days. Beginning on the First of December, one window is opened each day until we get to Christmas Eve, when we welcome Yule, and the festivity of Christmas begins again. Advent calendars and candles are key, we feel, to the enjoyment that comes with what we call a Slow Christmas.
