Handmade Wooden Flower Girl from Germany: Pansy (Stiefmütterchen)

Handmade Wooden Flower Girl from Germany: Pansy (Stiefmütterchen)

  • 7100

A German classic, not much changed from the originals first made in 1946: This lovely flower girl is handmade and delicately painted by hand, too. She holds a lovely pansy blossom. About 4 1/2" tall on a base that is about 1 1/4" wide. Perfect for spring and summer and for bringing a bit of cheer to winter's dark days.

Handmade from carved and turned wood and handpainted by artisans of the Dregeno Cooperative in the heart of Germany's Erzgebirge Mountains; the flower part is made of cardboard, wood, and wire and is also painted by hand. These flower girls are an old specialty of WEHA Kunst, one of the original members of the Dregeno Cooperative. WEHA Kunst was founded in 1946 by Fritz Haupt, who began making these flower girl figures when he could not find work in post-war Dresden. The small company of artisans blossomed quickly and soon moved to larger quarters in nearby Dippoldiswalde in the Erzgebirge Mountains. The company was nationalized during the GDR era, but with German reunification in 1990, Fritz was once again in charge of the company. His daughter ran the company until her retirement in 2021. It remains still a small company of artisans focused on creating charming handmade objects to Fritz Haupt's original high quality standards.
