Paper Luminarias with Papel Picado for Dia de Muertos, set of 4
The artisans we work with in San Miguel de Allende have brought together two of their longstanding traditions: papel picado (the art of handcut tissue paper banners) and farolitos, or candlelit luminarias, the paper lanterns that line walkways on special evenings like Dia de Muertos. This set features Day of the Dead patterns. Each set contains 4 paper luminarias made of the traditional white paper bag, each almost 10" tall, with subtly different appliquéd calavera skull patterns in different colors. Add a scoop of sand or pebbles (or kitty litter) to the open bag, then place a votive or tea light firmly in the sand. Set in place, illuminate in the darkness. So beautiful. Take caution, of course, with any open flame. For outdoor use only (when lit). Of course, you may also use battery powered candles, in which case you may use these farolitos indoors or out. Handmade by artisans in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
