The Velveteen Rabbit: Or How Toys Become Real, by Margery Williams
In the nursery, only the toys that are old and wise truly understand what it means to be Real. The Velveteen Rabbit, a newcomer to the nursery, asks one of the most knowledgeable toys, the Skin Horse, what being Real means. And so begins the Velveteen Rabbit’s journey towards becoming real – through the love of a child.

My own introduction to The Velveteen Rabbit came not as a child, but one Christmas when I happened to be far from home and on my own in Hendersonville, North Carolina. On Christmas Eve, I walked through the cold night to a Midnight Mass service at the Episcopal Church, or maybe it was Catholic (but I think it was Episcopal), and the pastor's homily focused on The Velveteen Rabbit. It was very moving, and I felt connected to all the folks around me. It's a pretty wonderful story.
Sturdy softcover, 46 pages. 2022 edition of the 1922 classic.
