Copperman's Day 2014: Take Joy

Copperman's Day 2014: Take Joy

  • 500

Keep the naysayers and fear mongers at a distance, we say. There's enough negativity in the world, thank you very much, and for our inaugural Copperman's Day print, we're suggesting a message of positivity: Take Joy. It's a message you can send to friends and relations and a message you can pin to your bulletin board or place on your desk at work as a gentle reminder that you are responsible for your own happiness. It's the first of three suggestions written in a Christmas Eve letter by Fra Giovanni Giocondo in 1513. The friar and the letter may possibly be fictional, but we don't care; the message is perfect.

Copperman's Day is an old Dutch printer's holiday. It falls on the First Monday after Epiphany, each January. It was traditional on this day for printers' apprentices in Holland to receive the day off to work on their own projects––usually small printed keepsakes that they'd sell for a copper. It's a tradition we feel is ready for revival, and with that thought, here is our Copperman's Day print for 2014––our inaugural one. We intend to make it an annual tradition.

These miniprints happen to be standard postcard size. Each is printed by hand from historic wood and metal types in multiple, separate print runs on the Vandercook 4 printing press in our Lake Worth studio on recycled French Speckletone papers.
